Mayor’s message

Spring will bring a new highlight onto our community calendar, with Taste of Harmony on Saturday 19 September. This free cultural festival celebrates the many cultures that make Hornsby Shire such a wonderful place to live. With international food, music, performances and activities for all ages, it is a fantastic opportunity to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the diversity that enriches our community.

I would also like to acknowledge Dementia Action Week, which runs from 21 to 27 September. The Council team are committed to acknowledging the challenges around dementia and to acknowledge the role of family and carers meeting those challenges.

These initiatives reflect our commitment to building a connected, inclusive and welcoming Hornsby Shire for everyone to enjoy.

Beecroft: Leafy tracks and village charm

Beecroft offers a balance of bushland and village life, all within easy reach of the station.

Around 10 minutes on foot will take you to the Beecroft-Cheltenham Link Track, a network of bushland reserves with options ranging from short strolls to walks of up to 2 kilometres. Interpretive signage along the way highlights local flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

Return to the village centre afterwards for a coffee, lunch or browse through local shops.

A walk through history

Hidden within the bushland of Old Mans Valley, the Heritage Steps, also known as the ‘Depression Steps’ offer a powerful connection to our local past.

Dating back to the early 20th century, the steps are first associated with the Higgins family, early occupants of Old Mans Valley, who likely constructed the original section between what is now Hornsby Park and the Crusher Plant Precinct. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, this route was formalised and significantly expanded through a government relief work program. Using basic tools, workers carved hundreds of steps into the hillside, creating a vital link between the valley below and the township above.
