A huge happy Christmas - plus all the news from Council!

I am finding it harder to feel the usual Christmas cheer. Our country is burning. Towns are facing no water. There is silence from our federal government.

But our local RFS volunteers are heroes.

On Saturday, Cherrybrook Brigade,
Arcadia Rural Fire Brigade and Berowra Rural Fire Brigade responded to fires at Mount Wilson as part of a Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Strike Team. They continue to fight the massive Gospers Mountain fire.

Christmas 2019 might be a tough one for many, but there are lots of people doing good work locally. So here’s some of it …

The 25,000th tree

I recently celebrated another remarkable year with Ross Rapmund’s nursery team of staff & volunteers. The 25,000th street tree is now over a metre tall. Of course it’s growing strongly with Ross watching over it!

What are BMAC and ESAC? And why are they important?

BMAC and ESAC are two Council committees. One looks after bushland (the Bushland Management & Advisory Committee). And ESAC is new: it’s the Environment and Sustainability Advisory Committee.

Some people are surprised that I do not support Council running two environment committees. I have good reasons. I do not support committees for the sake of committees. Unless they have clear goals, they can waste staff time and resources. The Bushland committee has a very limited charter. It does very little that Council staff are not already doing. Instead, I support one focussed and effective group. The new group (ESAC) has a charter to achieve results.

I will be Deputy Chair of ESAC - and I would love you to join me!

If you are passionate about our environment and have expertise to share, please consider applying to be on the new Environment & Sustainability Committee here. We will meet 2 April; 6 August; 5 November 2020.

Smoking bans

Smoking is already banned in Hornsby Mall. Council staff are currently informing people about the ban, rather than fining them straight away - which I support. If the results are positive, the a ban might be extended to other town centres. Beecroft will be my priority. Several residents have already asked for action on this issue.

Rural lands

I am confident that this Rural Lands review has been a  fair and balanced process so far. And it needs to be, because there are passionate views for and against subdivision. Work is continuing on the Rural Lands study to incorporate all the feedback from residents. The report will be exhibited in 2020. I will let everyone know when it is public.

Top row: Glad brand is OK to recycle, but cling wrap is best avoided; Council waterways expert Ana and oyster grower Adam on an Estuary tour; speaking at a climate community forum in Bowral with Ian Dunlop & John Hewson.
Middle row: celebrating metal straws at the Council Christmas party with events organiser Jemima; some of the 25,000 trees Ross and the team have grown; speakers and organisers at the Thornleigh climate dinner.
Bottom row: Ross Rapmund and Christmas bells in flower; Leah acknowledging Country at the Friends of Berowra Valley talk on glossy black cockatoos; Uncle Laurie Bimson Welcoming guests to Country at the Bushcare 30th anniversary Christmas party.

Waste Strategy

I love waste! So I loved reading everyone’s submissions on the draft waste strategy. The final document is likely to recommend that Council ask the federal government for action on packaging laws. Plus, it’s likely to demand that the state government to spend the money it collects via the Waste Levy - on waste! Right now, most of that money collected from Councils goes into the state government’s pockets. Read more here

Water restrictions

My three water tanks are nearly empty. And Council is also affected by Level 2 water restrictions. Council has to apply for exemptions with Warragamba at 43.3%. Check dam levels here. Council planting programs are on hold. Staff can only water new trees for 4 weeks. Please do your bit to help new trees hang in there. A bucket a week makes a huge difference.

Rules for using BBQs during the total fire ban

A total fire ban is in place for Greater Sydney for 4 days. That means:

  • No open flames

  • You can use an electric barbeque for cooking as long as it is under the direct control of a responsible adult, who is present at all times while it is operating, and no combustible material is allowed within two metres at any time it is operating.

  • You can use a gas BBQ IF:

    • It is under the direct control of a responsible adult, who is present at all times while it is operating

    • No combustible material is allowed within two metres

    • You have an immediate and continuous supply of water; and

    • The BBQ is within 20 metres of a home; or

    • The BBQ is within a designated picnic area and is approved by Council, National Parks or State Forest.

  • You cannot use a BBQ or pizza oven which burns solid fuel e.g. wood, charcoal or heat beads.

Read all the rules from the RFS about total fire bans here.

Scrunchable plastics. Here's where I was getting it wrong ...

♻️ I thought I knew everything that could go in the scrunchable plastic bins at supermarkets. But then my mother-in-law told me that plastic wrap was NOT ok. I checked it out. She’s right. Unless it’s Glad or Coles home brands, don’t put it in the plastic collection bins. Here are some other interesting dos and don’ts from the Redcycle website.

✅ bubble wrap cut into A3 pieces

✅ plastic bags of soil / compost, brushed down and cut into A3 pieces.

✅ cellophane from bunches of flowers cut into A3 sized pieces

✅ dry pet food and produce bags

✅ netting produce bags (cut off the metal clips first)

✅ Pet food bags (chaff/horse/chicken) - both the plastic and woven polypropylene types (but not woven nylon). Cut into A3 size pieces and shake free of as much product as possible

✅ Rice bags - both plastic and the woven type

✅ Snap lock bags / zip lock bags

✅ Clear plastic wine bladders (not the silver ones)

✅ Squeeze pouches with lid on (e.g. yogurt/baby food)

Here is some of what is NOT ok 🙅‍♀️🙅

❌ Balloons (of any kind)

❌ Bread bag tags

❌ disposable gloves of any kind

❌ Cling wrap/Cling film - with the exception of GLAD and COLES HOME brands

❌ coffee bags

❌ drinking straws, fishing line, styrofoam

❌ Laminated materials and overhead transparencies

❌ Rubber, rubber gloves, latex

❌ vinyl

❌ Wet plastic materials as mould is a problem

❌ Plastic/clear vinyl packaging from sheets and doonas

A focus on … Cherrybrook

Here's what Cherrybrook residents have raised with me this week: the need for median strip mowing and the need for improvements to Roberts Road. Looking ahead, I am hoping that the state government will reveal its plans for the government land around the station in the New Year. After nearly 7 years of waiting, residents deserve to know how high apartment buildings will be.

Hornsby Library: a makeover at last!

The Hornsby Library building is a former supermarket. It’s in need of some love. Staff have been working on plans to create new spaces inside that will make visiting more friendly and accessible for everyone. You can see the plans here and make submissions until 20 December (although late submissions are almost always accepted).

Thank you for reading right to the very end of my newsletter - and for your support and feedback this year. A very merry Christmas from me and my family - to yours. Very best wishes for a safe an peaceful start to the New Year. May it bring good things for all of us.

Emma

PS - Congratulations to Asquith resident Varsha Yajman. Varsha campaigns with the School Strike 4 Climate movement and spoke at the Hornsby Greens end-of-year plastic-free feast last week. She has just received her HSC results. What a superstar! And HUGE congratulations to everyone like Varsha who has just finished year 12. It is a demanding year.
